What is Plastic Pyrolysis?

The word "pyrolysis" comes from Greek: "pyro" meaning heat and "lysis" meaning breaking down. It refers to the thermal decomposition of materials at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. Plastic pyrolysis is a chemical recycling process that converts plastic waste into valuable products like fuel oil, carbon black and syn-gas. Unlike other plastic recycling solutions, plastic pyrolysis has relatively low requirements on the type and quality of plastics. Generally, apart from PVC and PET plastics, other plastic waste all can be recycled with the plastic pyrolysis machine.

How Does Pyrolysis Work?

1. Feedstock Preparation

Plastic waste (such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene) is collected, shredded(if needed).

2. Heating in a Reactor

The collected plastic is fed into the pyroltysis reactor. Inside the reactor, it is gradually heated to temperatures between 280°C and 400°C without oxygen. Because there’s no oxygen, the plastics don’t burn — instead, they break down into smaller molecules.

3. Thermal Decomposition and Product Collection

As the plastic heats up, it breaks down into gases and liquids:

Condensable gases turn into liquid fuel oil after going through the condensation system, often called pyrolysis oil or heavy oil.

Non-condensable gases can be captured and used to fuel the process itself after purifying.

Solid residues, like carbon black, are left behind and can be used in industrial applications.
