What Is Plastic Pyrolysis Oil Yield?

Plastic pyrolysis oil yield refers to the proportion of liquid hydrocarbon products recovered from plastic waste after thermal decomposition and condensation. The actual yield varies depending on the type and composition of the plastic feedstock and the operating conditions of the pyrolysis plant.

A well-designed plastic pyrolysis plant can convert suitable waste plastics into pyrolysis oil, non-condensable gas and solid carbon black. However, the amount of oil produced is not determined by the pyrolysis reactor alone. Feedstock composition, pretreatment, pyrolysis temperature, heating efficiency and condensation performance can all affect the final oil yield.

So, how can you improve oil yield in a plastic pyrolysis plant?

  1. Choose the Right Plastic Feedstock

Feedstock selection is one of the most important factors affecting plastic pyrolysis oil yield.

Different plastics have different chemical structures and therefore produce different quantities and qualities of liquid products during pyrolysis. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) are commonly considered suitable feedstocks for plastic pyrolysis because they can produce relatively high liquid yields under appropriate operating conditions. While the presence of PVC, PET, moisture, dirt and other unwanted materials can affect the pyrolysis process and product quality. Also, before feeding plastic waste into the reactor, operators should remove obvious contaminants and control excessive moisture. Depending on the type of plastic waste, sorting, shredding and other pretreatment processes may be required.

  1. Optimize Pyrolysis Temperature

Temperature is one of the key parameters affecting plastic pyrolysis oil yield.

If the temperature is too low, plastic may not fully decompose, resulting in incomplete conversion and lower production efficiency. If the temperature is excessively high, more hydrocarbon vapors may undergo secondary cracking, producing additional non-condensable gas instead of liquid oil. Therefore, the goal is not simply to increase the temperature. The operating temperature should be matched to the feedstock and desired product distribution.

Different plastics require different process conditions, so commercial plants should use appropriate temperature control rather than applying one fixed temperature to every feedstock.

  1. Optimize the Condensation System

A high-performing reactor alone cannot guarantee a high oil yield. The condensation system is equally important. After pyrolysis, hot hydrocarbon vapors must be cooled and separated into liquid oil and non-condensable gas. If the condensation system is inefficient, part of the potentially recoverable oil may remain in the gas stream.

Optimizing the condensation process can improve liquid recovery without necessarily changing the reactor itself.

In a word, improving plastic pyrolysis oil yield requires more than increasing the reactor temperature or feeding more plastic. Huayin waste plastic pyrolysis plant has undergone over thirty years' researching and developing, which can make full use of the waste plastics to get the good quality fuel oil. Batch type, semi-continuous design and fully continuous design, Huayin can provide various types for you.
